Job Description

Roanoke County Public Schools is accepting applications for full time building operators.  This is a 12 month position, 8 hours per day evening shift with full time benefits.


Report to Building Manager

Position Description/Job Summary

The Building Operator is responsible for maintaining the school building and grounds.



  1. empty trash
  2. empty pencil sharpeners
  3. vacuum
  4. dry mop
  5. wet mop
  6. wipe desk and chairs clean
  7. damp wipe erasure boards
  8. dust rooms
  9. clean walls
  10. replace empty paper towel rolls & toilet paper
  11. clean windows
  12. clean trash cans inside and out
  13. clean counter tops and fronts of cabinets
  14. clean towel boxes & soap dispensers
  15. refill soap dispensers
  16. check and replace lights
  17. clean chalk trays
  18. clean desk tops
  19. wipe window sills


  1. spot clean
  2. clean vents
  3. clean water fountains


  1. clean sinks
  2. clean and refill towel dispensers
  3. clean and refill soap dispensers
  4. clean underneath soap dispensers
  5. clean toilets and urinals
  6. clean bottom or commodes, behind commodes, partitions, doors and framers

 Additional assignments

  1. empty barrels
  2. clean tops of vending machines
  3. set up equipment for activities
  4. grounds maintenance
  5. snow removal
  6. building checks
  7. Work overtime as requested

Education/Experience & Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Minimum of high school diploma or GED Equivalent.
  • Ability to lift 50 – 100 lbs. repetitively.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions, i.e., extreme heat and extreme cold.
  • Knowledge of custodial cleaning supplies.
  • Knowledge of various types and styles of light bulbs.
  • Knowledge of school furniture needs.
  • Possess computer skills.
  • Possess good organizational skills.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
