Support the Charlottesville Department of Utilities in fulfilling its service to provide efficient and safe utilities to all in our community. The Charlottesville Department of Utilities - Gas Division is seeking a qualified candidate to join our team as a Gasline Welder who is highly motivated and who strives for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of Leadership, Trust, Creativity, Respect, and Excellence.

This position performs difficult skilled work in the fastening and fabrication of natural gas distribution and service lines. Does related work as required.

The starting amount will be between $16.51 and $27.24 an hour. Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, non-exempt, position.
 Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Welds connection and converting sleeves and fittings to steel gas pipe, threads pipe;
  • Fabricates pipe applications for residential and commercial gas meter installations;
  • Constructs regulator stations and connecting piping;
  • Welds valves, high pressure piping;
  • Repairs and fabricates replacement and necessary parts for division equipment;
  • Maintains welding equipment and takes control of supplies and materials;
  • Repairs, restores and installs gas pressure regulators and devices;
  • Assists with maintenance of high and low pressure gas line valves and regulators and records;
  • Assists in making high pressure taps on natural gas lines;
  • Assists in installation of large high pressure meter setups and records;
  • Records all new and discontinued high pressure meter setups;
  • Checks meter setups on gas lines between gate station and City for leak detection, maintenance and or servicing;
  • Assists field crew on an as-needed basis in the installation or repair of gas lines;
  • Performs house piping and meter moves on an as-needed basis;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

 Education, Experience and Skills:
Minimum Requirements:
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to at least a high school diploma or GED;
  • Minimum of 1 year of natural gas welding experience;
  • Certification in electrical welding at time of hire;
  • Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia at time of hire. (To view our driving eligibility requirements, go to the 'About City Jobs' section of our FAQs on the HR webpage);
  • Must be able to work overtime. Position is subject to standby and emergency call and reside within 40 minutes response time to the City Yard;
  • Certified in plastic pipe fusion and Mueller tapping equipment operation within 6 months of hire;
    Must maintain all certifications required by federal and state regulations;
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather;
  • Position is subject to federally mandated Department of Transportation drug and alcohol regulations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference of 1 year experience in oxyacetylene and arc welding of utility pipe lines;
  • Three years of natural gas welding experience preferred;
  • Two years welding qualifications under API 1104 standard for utility pipe lines preferred;
  • Valid CDL is preferred.
Skill: Considerable skill in oxyacetylene and arc welding; skill in the use of specialized tools and equipment used in natural gas pipefitting; thorough knowledge of methods used in welding, cutting, brazing and heating pipe and related fittings; thorough knowledge of plastic fusion; thorough knowledge of the safe methods and practices used when working with gas line and high pressure meters and related devices; ability to supervise the work of others; ability to follow oral and written instructions.

 Physical Conditions & Work Contacts:
Works independently to perform duties, able to note abnormal operating conditions, and makes decisions about corrective actions. Work is performed outside under all weather conditions requiring the use of appropriate protective equipment. Requires the ability to perform strenuous manual labor requiring walking, lifting, reaching, climbing, stooping, pushing, pulling, and carrying. Must be able to frequently lift 10-50 lbs.
